| Static and Slitting! One Customers Story |
The operators at Tolas Health Care Packaging were in for a shock...or two. During their slitting process of medical grade Tyvek from Dupont and other coated and laminated substrates, static charges were building up and causing uncomfortable operator shocks.
Static charge buildup during slitting and throughout the converting process can cause a variety of problems in addition to operator shock. Surfaces with a static charge can attract trim fragments and environmental dirt and dust, causing contamination of the web. Problems such as production slowdowns, increased production costs and poor product quality can be the result of the contamination.
Tolas looked at several systems and vendors for a solution to their static problem, including Simco and their New PerforMAX Static Neutralizing System.
The PerforMAX offers several unique features including long range ionization. Even when installed 2-10 inches from the web (depending on conditions) and up to 20 inches away on winders, the PerforMAX provides outstanding static control. No other system that Tolas looked at had such an extended range capability. Simco was the only company that would stand by their system in this demanding application.
To solve Tolas’ problem, Simco found the source of the problem, static charge buildup as the web wound onto the rewind shafts. As the rolls got bigger, the voltage of the static charge increased, causing the operator shock.
The PerforMAX’s extended range capability and high ion output was the key to successfully solving Tolas’ static problem. The system was able to neutralize the charge when the roll reached it’s maximum diameter and was also able to effectively neutralize at startup when the core was several inches away from the bar.
